VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR THE TOURISM INDUSTRY IN FINLAND

finland_pl

1. GENERAL EDUCATION SYSTEM

In Finland all children complete the compulsory nine-year comprehensive school (PERUSKOULU/ GRUNDSKOLA), after which those who want to continue their studies choose between the upper secondary school (KESKIASTE/ MELLANSTADIE) which provides general education (LUKIO/ GYMNASIUM) and a vocational institution (AMMATILLINEN KOULU/ YRKESLÄROANSTALT), the estimated time of studies is three years for both alternatives. Holders of upper secondary level qualifications are eligible for studies at polytechnics (AMMATTIKORKEAKOULU/ YRKESHÖGSKOLA) and with certification from high school for studies at universities. Polytechnics provide higher vocational level diplomas (AMMATTIKORKEAKOULUTUTKINTO/ YRKESHÖGSKOLEEXAMEN) and the studies take approximately 3.5 years.

2. VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN SCHOOLS

Vocational institutions in hotel, catering and tourism provide frequent training during the three-year studies (two years for students with high school certification), all in all 6 months. Students train in restaurants and hotels connected to the institution or in enterprises.
On higher education, polytechnics offer a more practical alternative to university education. Courses differ from those at the university reflecting the practical needs of working life. Polytechnics also require 20 ECTS (about 800 hours) of practical training in the working field.

3. FURTHER TRAINING

  • Adult education: Adults may in addition to vocational qualifications, complete further qualifications and specialist qualifications. These can be obtained by demonstrating in skill tests the professional competence acquired by various studies and working experience.
  • Apprenticeship: Apprenticeship training is an option where the training is mostly given at the workplace. Apprenticeship training is suitable for both young people and adults as initial and further training.
