The Profile of S.T.P.
The School of Tourist Professions (S.T.P.) is a state organization under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism. It operates 10 Training Centres in different cities of Greece, with curricula that cover three areas of study :
- Advanced Studies (Postgraduate)
- Technical Vocational Studies (Intermediate)
- Training Classes for Unqualified Employees
The task and aim of the School of Tourist Professions has always been to provide correct professional training in combination with the traditional concept of hospitality according to which services are offered not to "customers" but to "guests".
I. Advanced Studies
The Training Centres of Advanced Studies (ASTP) in Rhodos and Aghios Nickolaos, Crete, provide education of a higher level preparing the graduates for advanced executive posts in the hospitality industry.
The school buildings provide optional boarding facilities, free of any charge for Greek and E.C. students.
Attendance at the advanced level of studies lasts three years.
Prospective students must have completed the secondary level of education, generally twelve years of schooling.
Admission of applicants as well as any details concerning applications, submission of documents, schedules etc. are responsibilities of the Ministry of Education (Department of Professional Education), 15 Metropoleos street, Athens.

Admission of applicants as well as any details concerning applications, submission of documents, schedules etc. are responsibilities of the Ministry of Education (Department of Professional Education), 15 Metropoleos street, Athens.
Each school year consists of two terms :
- The Academic Term, starting in October and finishing in June.
- The Practical Training Term, which is a continuation of the former, starting in July and finishing at the end of September.
During the Practical training Term the students are given the opportunity to practice what they learnt in the Academic Term, working at hotel enterprises selected by the S.T.P.
The technical and professional training is combined with the necessary academic knowledge required for a successful career in a modern tourist enterprise. Thus, the students have to take the following subjects :

II.Technical Vocational Studies (T.V.S.T.P.)
The School of Tourist Professions operates eight Training Centres for Technical Vocational Studies in Athens (Anavyssos), Thessaloniki, Alexandroupolis, Heraklion, Corfu, Nafplion, Rhodos and Galaxidi. The courses include technical, professional and theoretical subjects designed to provide students with the required skills for high quality services in the various sectors of the industry.
The Technical Vocational Studies Programme consists of the following courses :
- Hotel and Catering Industry Courses (offered at all the Training Centres).
- Culinary Courses
(offered at the Training Centres of Anavyssos, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Galaxidi). - Confectionery Courses
(offered at the Training Centres of Anavyssos, Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Galaxidi).
For the above Courses applicants must take admittance examinations. Prospective students must be no older than 23 years of age and must have completed at least three years of Secondary School.
The S.T.P also offers : - Travel Agency Courses at the Training Centres of Anavyssos, Rhodos, Corfu and Thessaloniki. Applicants must take admittance examinations. Prospective may be up to 25 years old and must have completed 6 years of Secondary School.
- Animation Courses at the Training Center of Anavyssos. Prospective students take admittance examinations. They and must be up to 30 years old and have completed 6 years of secondary school.
Attendance at the T.V.S.T.P is provided free for Greek and E.U. students. It lasts two years for all courses. Each education period consists of two terms :
- The Academic Term, starting in October and ending in May.
- The Practical training Term, which is a continuation of the Academic Term, starting in June and finishing at the end of September.
During this term the students practice at hotel enterprises placed there with the care of the S.T.P.

Note :
- During their attendance at the Training Centres, the students take part in different services, according to their programme, in order to get familiar with their future profession on one hand and to serve themselves on the other (e.g Restaurant service, kitchen service, Housekeeping).
- On enrolling in a Training Centre, the students are to pay a sum of money, sharing part of the cost for their uniforms ordered by the S.T.P.
- Prospective students have to undergo medical examination at their own expense, according to the instructions of the S.T.P.
III. Training Classes for Unqualified Employees
Every year, in different cities and towns, the S.T.P operates Training Classes for Unqualified Employees in Hotel, Restaurant, Culinary and Confectionery skills for persons already working in the Hotel and Catering Industry. During their attendance, the students have the opportunity to enrich their technical skills with the necessary theoretical knowledge, so that they may improve their performance in the workplace.
- Attendance at the Training Classes for Unqualified Employees lasts 5 1/2 months. Classes begin on 16th October and finish on 31th March.

FOREIGN STUDENTS
- Students who come from countries which are members of the European Union (E.U.) are admitted to the S.T.P under the same conditions as Greek students.
- A limited number of students coming from foreign countries (non members of E.U.) are also admitted.
In this case, candidates must submit the following documents :- Applications for admission indicating the Training Centre and the Course the applicant is interested in.
- Birth Certificate (the applicant must not be over 25 years of age).
- General Education Certificate, officially translated into Greek.
- Certificate of the Athens University Greek Language Courses (Duration of Courses is one school - year).
- A State Hospitality Health Certificate, issued no more than one month prior to the date of the application for admission.
Since the lectures are delivered in Greek, foreign students must have competence in reading, writing and speaking Greek.
Greek Language courses for foreign students of about one years duration are offered by the University of Athens.

FEES
School charges covering training fees, board and lodging for one school period (from mid October to the end of May) but not covering the Christmas and Easter holidays, amount to drs. 600,000 approximately per year for all Courses. School charges may probably increase in subsequent years to keep in line with the inflation in Greece. During the on the job training period (from June 1st to the end of September) the trainees' lodging, board and laundry expenses are covered by the hotels where they work. In addition to the above school charges, foreign students must have enough funds to cover living and personal expenses when the training centres are closed, during the Christmas / Easter holidays, the second fortnight of May and the first fortnight of October, a total of about 60 days.
