Vocational training and further vocational training in the hospitality and tourism industries in Germany

A. Hospitality Industry

  • Initial training course, with continuous training in industry, as a :

    a) Chef
    b) Waiter/Waitress
    c) Hotel Clerk
    d) Specialist in Theme Gastronomy
    e) Hotel Administrative Clerk

    The weekly programme consists of three and a half days spent in an establishment and one and a half days spent at the vocational school.

  • The age at entry is between 16 and 19. Students who have finished their secondary school education and students from colleges of further education may start a vocational training course in the Hospitality Industry.

  • The vocational training takes 3 years for each of the professions.

  • After successfully passing the final examination of the appropriate Chamber of Industry and Commerce the candidate will hold a state qualification.

  • The progression to an institution of further education, i.e. “School for Operational Management in the Hospitality Industry” is possible after successfully completing the initial training course and after having two years experience in the Hospitality Industry. After a successful study period of two years the graduates of the Hotel Management School are awarded the “Government Controlled Diploma in Hotel, Catering and Institutional Operations”.
    Apart from gaining management skills and knowledge of their chosen profession, the students at the age of 25 to 28 can acquire additional qualifications in the sectors Catering, Conferences or Tourism.

B. Tourism
  • Initial training course, with continuous training in industry, as a : Qualified Travel Agent
    The weekly programme consists of three and a half days spent in an establishment and one and a half days spent at the vocational school.

  • The age at entry is between 16 and 19. Students who have finished their secondary school education and students from colleges of further education may start a vocational training course in the Hospitality Industry

  • The vocational training takes 3 years.

  • After successfully passing the final examination of the appropriate Chamber of Industry and Commerce the candidate will hold a state qualification.

  • The progression to an institution of further education, i.e. a Tourism School, is possible after successfully completing the initial training course and after having two years experience in the tourism sector. After a successful study period of two years the graduates are awarded the “Government Controlled Diploma in Tourism”.

  • The Polytechnic for Tourism (Fachhochschule für Tourismus) requires the Fachochschule entry qualification and after 4 years successful study leads to the “Diplom-Betriebswirt” (Degree in Tourism). This education is primarily theoritical.
