Cultural Show and Variations – With a Poem as an Extra Treat!

E-mail Print
One of the three ‘pillars’ of Christmas in Europe is the cultural part, in which each delegation is supposed to present either a Christmas carol, a story, a sketch or a piece of appropriate music – the choice is left to each school. And so on Sunday December 2nd the Semmering school’s gymnasium provided the setting for this cultural evening which was divided into two parts; during the interval the audience was treated to a buffet consisting entirely of typically Austrian dishes.
Let’s tell it as it was: some delegations had gone to a lot of trouble to present a performance relating to Christmas or to a Christmas tradition – as specified in the guidelines – while others had not really understood what was required of them. But that didn’t really matter – as with the Olympic Games the important thing was taking part, and from this point of view it was a success. Sometimes there were fits of the giggles accompanying hilariously funny performances, while the audience was generous in its applause for the evening’s actors.

And we can’t resist quoting below the poem written and recited for the audience by Julia Klishchuck, an English teacher at the ‘Linguistic University of Nizhny Novgorod’ (Russia)

Christmas always means some mystery
Nicely decorated pastry
Cakes and sweets, and many presents
Lying on the floor from parents
Fun and jokes, smiling faces
Very many different places
Where people are coming from
To celebrate the holiday at home

And today we've got a chance
To spend some time off in France, Belgium, Italy and Sweden,
Poland Hungary and even
To see how nicely is in Greece
Dressed for services a priest

Cooking always makes you sad
Specially when the taste is bad
But when you cook with friends, at leisure
You can get a real pleasure
Serving a very special dish
That'll come up to everyone's wish

All of you are friendly people
You are open at heart
You are playing, dancing, singing
All that's good to people bringing
And we'd like to tell you "Thank you" for the unity
Which is made by charming people from AEHT!
